"Protecting incumbents from their voters is one thing the Democrats and Republicans can still agree on. Through a series of anticompetitive tactics, the two political parties have created a hidden monopoly structure that accounts for a Congress with a 77 percent disapproval rating yet a nearly 90 percent re-election rate."
The Democrats and Republicans serve as monopolies in our political system. The negative effects of monopolies in economics are well known (the lack of competition makes poor products/services more likely, and innovation is stifled) - and the same is true for our politics. What if this weren't the case, and how could we start moving past monopoly politics?
