We usually think about Environmentalism as an attempt to clean up or bring a place back to its original condition - but what about opportunities to actually make an ecosystem healthier through human intervention?
During Hurricane Sandy, the eastern-most section of Fire Island, NY was overtaken by the sea - causing the ocean to break through and connect to the bay. Since that time, however, water quality in the bay has increased tremendously given the new circulation, and species seem to be flourishing in this new environment.
How could we go about finding such opportunities to proactively improve our local ecosystems? What opportunities might exist in other locations?
